Slow cooked red wine beef cheeks

You’ll amaze yourself with this recipe for slow cooked red wine beef cheeks. They are absolutely delicious. Cooked in a slow cooker means you can prepare in advance making it a great recipe for entertaining or as an out of this word mid week meal.

We made these last week as a nourishing mid-week (fancy I know) and the great thing was there was enough to freeze another four portions. So over the next few weeks when we are needing a quick meal we can defrost these amazing beef cheeks, cook up some easy vegetables and dinner is done in no time. Brilliant!

Slow Cooked Red Wine Beef Cheeks Recipe

Ingredients

  • 6 beef cheeks (I like using smaller cheeks if you can get them)
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 celery stick chopped
  • 2 tsp thyme
  • 2 tsp rosemary
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 carrot chopped
  • 5 cloves garlic crushed
  • 1 cup red wine

Method

  1. In a large frypan saute onion, carrot and celery in olive oil until soft then add the crushed garlic and red wine until it comes to a simmer. Set aside.
  2. Generously season the beef cheeks with salt then fry in a little olive oil until browned on both sides. (Optional step)
  3. Add browned beef cheeks to the slow cooker then pour over the red wine mix and slow cook according to your slow cooker’s instructions. The meat it ready when it easily falls apart when you shred it with a fork. (My slow cooker is an old one so this dish takes about 8 hours of cooking, however, I have used a more modern slow cooker and have had the cheeks ready after about 5 hours.)
